Perhaps people are surprised by Arsenal because of their indefensibly low preseason expectations of the club, by two wins and a 10-2 aggregate over Everton (last week) and Portsmouth (today) is classic Arsenal. The Everton result was admitted impressive. Mightly. But their 2-0 over Celtic and their 4-1 win over Portsmouth are par-of-the-course, if not obligatory. These are the type of results that have become characteristic of the Gunners in recent seasons. Yes, they’ve had their losing-at-home-to-Hull hiccups, but for the most part their talent and singe-minded approach leads to these types of results.

Impressive to me (and I keep harping on this): They have ten league goals yet none from the three players I expect to lead the club in goal at league’s end: Robin van Persie, Niklas Bendtner and Andrei Arshavin. But as Chris Riordan and I discussed over Twitter, those three are still contributing.

Mightly.

Manchester City got another three points in another match that could be viewed by Citizens-supporters as disappointing. They opened their Eastlands-season witha 1-0 win over Wolves, with Emmanuel Adebayor, one of the better City players on the day, getting his second goal of the season. Last week, I felt City was pedestrian in part because they were up three minutes in the match. Today, I thought they played better against an opponent that put up a fight. There are still concerns, particularly at the back, but it’s a good six point start. For Wolves, it was a good showing in a match from which they should not have expected anything.

Manchester United supporters should be worried, even if the final score was 5-0 over Wigan. The first half was not only scoreless – it was relatively evenly played, even if United ultimately had the better chances. A good run in the second half led to an impressive final, but this club, in form, is behind the top teams in the league. They have not found their identity in attack, and despite his goals, it is unclear Rooney is ready to be the main player in whatever that identity becomes. Today, Berbatov was their best forward.

Bolton loses at Hull, 1-0, in Jozy Altidore’s debut. I liked the Wanderers to possibly break into the top 10 this season (I eventually picked them twelfth, I think), but losing at the Reebok to Sunderland followed by a loss at Hull is six lost points that (two weeks ago) may have thought theirs.

Sunderland got two goals from Kenwyn Jones to move to six points in three matches, being Blackburn 2-1. Steve Bruce’s impact is already being felt, as their winning their matches against teams who many perceive at their level. This might be the team that breaks the table’s upper half. For the Rovers, they’ve still shown nothing to suggest another relegation battle can be avoided.

And finally, Birmingham and Stoke drew 0-0 at St. Andrews. Each club has four points through three matches and should be content with their starts.
