Morelia-Cruz Azul Preview at Examiner

In Mexico, the 2009 Apertura Liguilla is down to four teams, with the first semifinal starting tonight. Cruz Azul travels to Morelia to take on the Monarchs, winners of the hellacious Group 2.

Over at Examiner.com, I take a look at the two teams, add in some facts about the regular season, and throw in some subtle bias. You know: I write.

I will be writing previews and results of all the Liguilla match-ups from now until the tournament ends next weekend.

Morelia and Cruz Azul will start the Liguilla’s semifinals on Wednesday, with the two group-winners meeting in at Estadio Morelos for the first leg of their Mexican Primera Apertura semifinal.

For Morelia, it is the continuation of a surprisingly strong season that saw them finish with the league’s third-best record on the back of a resugent Miguel Sabah. The veteran forward, who made his late, initial mark on the national team this year, has also sparked a resurgence in the Monarcas. In his first Apertura with Morelia since moving from Cruz Azul before the Clausura, Sabah is tied for the team-lead in goals, equalling Luis del Rey’s seven.
